Benefits of Breast Lift Surgery

Breast lift surgery, or mastopexy, can restore a youthful contour and placement to breasts that droop or sag – a condition called ptosis – as well as nipple malposition. The areola (the darker skin around the nipple) also can become enlarged, which distorts the natural proportions of the breast, and this can be addressed as well.

Breast Lift vs. Breast Augmentation

Some women want to enhance their breasts but are not sure if they need a breast lift or breast augmentation. Here is a comparison:

  • Breast lift reshapes the breasts (and areolas, if desired) but does not change breast size. The breasts may actually look smaller after a breast lift.
  • Breast augmentation increases the size of the breasts with an implant but does not take care of sagging.

Women who want more breast volume in addition to lifted, reshaped breasts often choose to have these procedures combined.

How Much Does a Breast Lift Cost Near Vancouver, BC?

The cost for a breast lift at our Vancouver-area practice varies with the surgical technique, whether it’s combined with another procedure such as breast augmentation, and individual factors. You will be provided with a personalized price for your procedure during your consultation with Dr. Mosher. Qualified patients can take advantage of financing through Medicard®.

Dr. Mosher’s Approach

A breast lift does not remove breast tissue (unless balancing of breast volume is needed) but merely tightens the skin and lifts the glandular tissue. Dr. Mosher offers the following techniques for mastopexy; the degree of breast sagging will determine which approach is right for you:

  • Crescent lift can be performed to correct small degrees of nipple ptosis or to make adjustments to nipple position. This technique removes only a semicircle of skin from the upper half of the areolar border, and does not address sagging of the breast itself.
  • Periareolar or “donut” lift can be effective when there is a small degree of breast and nipple ptosis. This technique removes a circle of skin from around the areola, lifting and tightening the breast from all directions. This approach also reduces the diameter of the areola in cases where this is a concern.
  • Vertical or “lollipop” lift may be an option for women with a moderate degree of sagging. This technique adds a vertical incision to the periareolar incision, creating the “lollipop” shape. Internal rearrangement of the sagging lower breast tissue can often create the illusion of having had a small implant placed. This is the most commonly performed technique but may be inadequate for severe sagging or very poor breast skin tone.
  • Standard or “anchor” lift is also a commonly performed approach. This technique expands on the vertical approach, adding a curved incision that runs along the breast crease for an anchor-shaped appearance. This approach allows for the greatest degree of skin tailoring and tightening of the breast, and is appropriate in cases of more extensive sagging.

Do Breast Lift Scars Go Away?

All approaches to this procedure involve some degree of scarring on the breast. Most of our breast lift patients feel that the improved shape is a worthwhile trade-off for the resulting scars. These scars are within normal garment lines (i.e., they will not be visible in a bra or swimsuit) and become less visible with time.

Breast ‘Auto-Augmentation’

Some breast lift patients are eligible to achieve even better upper breast fullness and cleavage without getting breast implants. Although this is not possible for every patient, expert surgical techniques can reposition and re-distribute your own tissues during a breast lift to customize your breast shape. For patients desiring more of their tissue in the upper half of their breasts’ contours, Dr. Mosher can determine during consultation if this can work for you. Good candidates for this technique are women who have enough breast tissue to achieve their desired look within an unpadded bra and who have more of their breast tissue currently below the level of their nipples.

Can a Breast Lift Be Combined With Other Procedures?

Yes. Many women enjoy multiple improvements from a single surgery by having a combination of procedures performed together. Popular options include:

Your Breast Lift Procedure

This surgery is done as an outpatient procedure in our surgery centre under light general anesthesia. The type of breast lift procedure you undergo will depend on the degree of sagging present, and the recommendation of Dr. Mosher. During the operation, the excess skin is removed, and the nipple-areolar complex is lifted to a higher position. The nipple remains attached to nerves and blood supply so that it can remain viable and functional following surgery. The breast tissue is repositioned, reshaped and supported internally to give the breast a more pleasing, youthful shape.

Breast Lift Recovery

Your incisions will be lightly dressed, and you will be allowed to wear a normal bra following surgery. Mild discomfort is to be expected, but oral medication will help manage this. You will experience some swelling and bruising for approximately 2 weeks, but most patients can return to work after just a few days. For most of our breast surgery patients, the final results of the procedure are typically achieved after 2 or 3 months with scars continuing to fade for many months.

How to Choose a Plastic Surgeon

Are Results Permanent?

Patients who have undergone mastopexy are not immune to the effects of gravity and time; their newly lifted breasts will continue to sag as you age. However, most find that their improved breast shape and position is long lasting and very gratifying. Women who combined their lift with breast implants often say that they love shopping for clothes to showcase their enhanced figures.

Are There Nonsurgical Alternatives?

Patients with mild laxity of the breasts may benefit from nonsurgical skin tightening with Morpheus8 treatments; however, moderate to significant sagging needs to be corrected by removing excess skin with a breast lift.
