If you have tried using eye creams to get rid of dark circles or bags under your eyes with little success, under eye fillers offer a solution. Tear troughs, dark circles, and bags under your eyes can be caused by genetics, the natural aging process, or lifestyle factors—like not getting enough water or sleep.
How Effective Are Under Eye Fillers?
The effectiveness of fillers under the eyes depends on selecting an injector with the expertise to treat this delicate area. The hyaluronic acid-based under eye fillers used at YES Medspa are proven to improve the appearance of hollows which in turn cause dark circles, by hydrating the skin, adding volume, and stimulating collagen production (thickening the skin). The result is a smoother, rejuvenated appearance.
Fillers we offer to address concerns under the eyes include:
- JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA®
- Teosyal® Redensity 2
Teosyal Redensity 2 is the first filler approved specifically to treat concerns under the eyes. However, as noted in the Annals of Dermatology, under eye fillers aren’t a solution for dark circles caused by pigmentation—whether that pigmentation is due to your natural skin colour or sun damage. Under eye filler is the best option when deepening or hollowing of the tear trough occurs. If the darkness under the eyes is caused by other pigmentation factors, treatments such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or Autologous Conditioned Plasma (ACP) therapy may be a better treatment option.

How Long Do Under Eye Fillers Last?
The duration of results varies depending on factors such as the type of filler used, your metabolism, and lifestyle factors. On average, under eye filler results can last anywhere from 6 to 24 months. Ongoing maintenance and follow-up treatments are required.
Is Under Eye Filler Treatment Painful?
While the idea of needles near the eye area may seem daunting, tear trough filler is typically injected using a cannula inserted along the lateral cheekbone, away from the eye altogether. The use of cannulas ensures safety when performing this treatment. Virtually all fillers contain lidocaine to minimize discomfort under the skin, but at YES Medspa we also apply topical anesthetic to numb the injection site. The anesthetic takes about 15 to 20 minutes to take effect.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Swelling is the most common side effect after filler injections. Applying cold compresses and sleeping slightly elevated for a couple of days minimizes the swelling. You may also experience some bruising. We provide all of our clients with pre-treatment instructions one week prior to treatment outlining activities, medications, and supplements to avoid to reduce the risk of bruising. A rare side effect to treating the tear trough is called the Tyndall effect, which occurs when fillers are injected too close to the skin’s surface, causing the area to take on a light bluish tinge because of the way the light scatters. Choosing an injector with proper experience, anatomical knowledge, and skill is crucial to mitigating the risk of the Tyndall effect.
How To Prepare for Your Treatment
If this is your first filler appointment, you can take a few steps beforehand to ensure good results. For example, avoid taking anti-inflammatory drugs, fish oil, and alcohol for 7 days before the appointment. Also, make sure to eat a normal breakfast or lunch on the day of your treatment so you don’t arrive with low blood sugar levels.
